Length of time on remand

How long are remand prisoners awaiting trial held for?

Some are held for over TWO years – latest Home Office figures show that in June this year there were 270 remand prisoners who had been in jail for more than two years.

Many are held for over a year – in June this year there were 320 who had been in prison for more than 12 months.

More than a thousand remand prisoners have been in custody for up to 12 months – in June this year there were 1,150 who had been in prison for between six and twelve months.

For men the average time in custody awaiting trial is 49 days and for women it is 39 days.

The table below shows the gradual increase over the last four years in the length of time remand prisoners are held in custody.
