Letter from jail

Letter sent to the Prison Reform Trust 11th August 2003
“I find myself in the category of an unconvicted remand prisoner. I prefer to call myself imprisoned without trial.

I have been in prison since Easter Saturday. I have not been able to enter a plea. Two bail applications have been turned down at the request of the Police and CPS. I am inclined to believe they have done this in order to hamper my defence.

"I know you have many issues to aquaint yourself with but I hope that you will find time to do something for the estimated 13,000 people (men and women) imprisoned without trial in Her Majesty’s prison system.”

What evil deed am I alleged to have committed? Obtaining services by deception, charges which I am innocent of and which I believe will be dropped before they come to trial. No trial date has been set as yet, so I am effectively jailed indefinitely!!

I have to suffer all the rigours of the regime intended for convicted prisoners and have a highly restrictive daily life set within a 22 hour lock up in a shared cell!

I know you have many issues to aquaint yourself with but I hope that you will find time to do something for the estimated 13,000 people (men and women) imprisoned without trial in Her Majesty’s prison system.”

The Reform Remand campaign organised by the Prison Reform Trust, is calling for:

  • An improvement in the treatment of, and conditions for, people held in prison awaiting trial

  • A reduction in the needless use of custodial remand
